The marine data visualization is a vital part of scientific management of marinedata, which can transform data that people can not directly view into intuitivegraphical forms, improving the utilization capacity of marine data research. As one ofthe main storage means of marine data, database systems, by storing and managingmarine data, can improve marine data normalization, data access efficiency andsecurity. Marine data is quite complex in data structure, making it difficult to accessdatabase uniformly or display directly. How to implement the uniform access to themarine database, reducing the workload the data manipulation, and implement thevisualization application are the main issues to be solved in this paper.Combining with practical research needs, using component technology,professional visual map tools and other technologies, this article does research workon key issues of the marine data visualization, designs and implements the visualquery and display system of marine data based on component technology. The mainresearch work and achievements are as follows:1. Proposes the B/S three-layer architecture model of the visual system,contributing to system extension. Visual information database is built by studying thecharacters of marine data and metadata, which can provide an external interface touniform access to data layer. Function modules in business layer are designed usingcomponent technologies, in order to improve the independence and reusability bymaking each module an independent component. In the client side, Ajax andOpenLayers are the main technologies used to complete the related functions, givinglight weight access to the system.2. Designs and implements the visual display function of the marine databaseon the basis of visual information database, including map interaction and plot display.Map interaction shows data on the map based on their geographic location. Data generating the plot sources from all the database visualization marine features. Andthe plot types consist of timing diagram, cross-sectional plot and comparison chart.Plot operations and storage functions are included as well.3. Analyses the structural characters of marine data, developing the marine dataformat conversion module. Data in the database format and file storage format such asNetCDF and ASCII can be transformed into each other, file formats can also beconverted, facilitating the marine data processing applications and the exchange ofmarine data and information sharing.The capabilities of the visualization system have been illustrated by specificapplications using data from the database in the selected Bohai sea area. It has provedthat the visualization system is of good quality and can be used in the developmentsof most marine data management systems. The software can satisfy users’ needs, notonly shorten the software development cycle, but also enhance the scalability andflexibility of the system.
