As the users' keeping and increasing demand of wideband and mobile services now, all varieties of emerged mobile applications have all claimed for the arrival of MOBILE ERA. No matter in what kind of mobile networks, because the energy of handsets are very limited, so energy saving is of great importance, especially compared with wired line networks. So it has huge importance of designing efficient power saving algorithms and strategies to guarantee the performance of communication systems.This thesis comes from the "Next Wideband Wireless Networks Communication System" project of CAS, ICT. The project is also named as the science layout project of the science committee of Beijing, and was cooperated with the British chip designer PICOCHIP company. The author was responsible for all the two important system modules' designing, coding, and testing related work, which was named HARQ module and SLEEP module. And did a deep research into the sleep mechanism related problems based on former foundation. The concrete work and novel ideas are as follows:Firstly, the dissertation briefly introduces the evolution of the power saving technology, do some summaries and comparison of the power saving mechanisms adopted in WCDMA, CDMA2000, WLAN systems in general. After this, the power saving mechanism of IEEE802.16 is introduced and analyzed. This dissertation points out its shortcomings, which will be the problems to be solved.Secondly, this dissertation presents the characteristics and the technical advantages of the IEEE802.16 specifications, including the deep analysis of its PHY and MAC layer protocol stack structure. Additionally, it introduces the software system of the realization of the IEEE802.16e MAC as well as the hardware system. And generally describes the design and implementation of the sleep module under this system.Thirdly, as for the most important part of this thesis, a concrete introduction and description against the sleep scenario under this project platform was present. This solution was implemented and tested under Linux OS as network driver program, including BS & MS sleep modules.Finally, the mathematics model used for describing the reference real scenario was built. The simulation under OPNET simulator was done against the sleep scheme proposed in this paper. The impact of sleep mechanism parameters on systems' overall performance was analyzed for being used as some guidelines for future research. The combination of sleep and handover could be the next-step research direction.
