In the Internet, the router is the equipment which connects the LAN, WAN networkand is the hub of the Internet. The performance of the router is one of the mainbottlenecks of the network communication, and its reliability and efficiency directlyaffects the overall quality of the network. With the increasing scale of the Internet andthe rapid growth of the network traffic, the overall performance of the network attractsmore and more attention. Meanwhile, because of the rapid development of multimediatechnology, the number of real-time traffic in the network such as audio and video isgradually increasing. Therefore, how to ensure low delay and low jitter for real-timebusiness has become a key issue for network research. However, the widespread use ofthe router buffer setting method has not fully met the performance requirements oftoday’s complex network, and which has become one of the obstacles to improvenetwork performance. So, how to set the router buffer size and at the same time satisfythe requirements of the overall performance of the network is necessary to study deeply.Firstly, we briefly introduce the current research state about router buffer sizesetting, and we point out the necessity of studying the subject. In the second part, the article compares, analyzes and summarizes the currentrouter buffer size settings. It points out some shortcomings of these methods in themanufacturing cost, network latency, packet loss rate and link utilization, whichprovides a basis and references for the follow-up study. The third part is the core content of the article. It firstly analyzes the maincomponents of the network traffic as well as their characteristics, and it points out thetheoretical basis and assumptions of this research. Then, due to the traditional buffersize setting can not be guaranteed that real-time services’ transmission with low delayand low jitter. In order to reduce network delay and to ensure the comprehensiveperformance of network conditions, the article embarks from the actual conditions ofnetwork, considering at the expense of sacrificing a certain amount of link utilization. Therefore, we propose a new more efficient core router buffer size setting methodwhich guarantees comprehensive performance index. At the same time, the article details the improvement through a combination of theory and simulation. The fourth part firstly introduces the network performance comprehensiveevaluation method and evaluation index selection. Then this article describes the law ofentropy weight. According to index weights on entropy method, we establish acomprehensive network performance evaluation model. By a comparative evaluation ofthe performance, it verifies the effectiveness of the method proposed in this paper aboutrouter buffer size setting. Finally, the last part summarizes the full text, put forward the shortcomings of thestudy, and propose the further research expectation.
