Robot roller hemming is a relatively new process of hemming for automotive closures, the hemming tool manipulated by controlling the industrial robot to complete the formation of closures (i.e. doors, hoods, tailgates and trunklids. The paper begins with overviewing the robot roller hemming system and the design, selection method of components, and then the roller hemming process and technological requirements were studied. On this basis, a new roller hemming FEA model was built and its feasibility was demonstrated. The new FEA model being applied to simulate the rope hemming process, the impact of parameters to rope height, roll-in and roll-out, wavy winkle were studied, and the roof hemming process feasibility was demonstrated. This paper makes the technological requirements as the pointcut, researches the methods to improve the rope hemming quality, primarily discusses the roof hemming feasibility with common hemming tool, and provides guidance for the engineering practice.
