Precision agriculture (forestry) is the new trend of the development ofagricultural (forestry) in the world today. Supported by the information technologies,it quantitatively implements a set of integrated modern management system at afixed time and location. The basic definition of “precision agriculture (forestry)” isto analyze the information of plant growth for system diagnostics, formulationoptimization and scientific management, so as to achieve higher income withminimum capital investment. Since image is an important source for mankind toobtain the intuitive information of plant growth, thus building a remote imagemonitoring system for information acquisition and long-distance transmission is thedevelopment trend of the agricultural (forestry) information management.FPGA has been used as a control unit of the whole system. FPGA capturesBayer images by adopting Verilog Language to configure the CMOS sensorMTP9001, and converts them to RGB mode which is easier for direct processing. Atthe same time, the RGB images are split into three separate parts(red、green andblue) for data storage. Data volume of digital image is so great that it is necessary tobe compressed. The two-dimensional integer5/3lifting wavelet transform improvedby processing the boundary data with the method of symmetric periodic extension istaken to compress the three parts in parallel. Meanwhile, Industrial-grade moduleMC52i of Cinterion Company and TCP/IP protocol are utilized to fulfill the designof image data transmitting wirelessly. The asynchronous serial communicationbetween FPGA and MC52i module is implemented by UART based on the VerilogLanguage. The design of remote image monitoring system includes hardware circuits andsoftware programs. The hardware design mainly contains: the GPRS wirelesscommunication module, memory expansion module and PCB designs. And softwaredesign includes programs corresponding to each function module: imageacquisition, image format conversion, image storage, image compression, imagetransmission and so on.Through various tests, the design not only satisfies the needs for plant imageacquisition, image preprocessing and wireless transmission, but also inhibits theincredible transmit when transport layer of the TCP/IP is congested, and ensures thePNSR and the visual effects of reconstructed images.
