The WAN interfaces are the critical components in router. The major function ofWAN interface management is to separate the upper modules such as operation, maintenance, protocol, database from bottom-driven. The process object of WANinterface management is various interfaces which can’t be handled individually becauseof the huge overhead. By extracting the common functions from different interfaces, theWAN interface management implements the unified process, eliminates the differencesin interfaces parameters and configurations, provides interface functions for othermodules, thus reduces the cost and improves management efficiency. Contents are asfollows:1) The WAN interfaces are introduced. The function and configuration of variousWAN interfaces are summarized and analysed, including async interface, serial interface,AM interface, ISDN BRI interface, CE1/PRI interface, CT1/PRI interface, E1-Finterface, T1-F interface, E3interface, T3interface, POS interface, FCM interface,subscriber-line and BSV interface.2) The WAN interface management software is designed. The WAN interfacemanagement’s functions are discussed, the design principle of WAN interfacemanagement is confirmed and some important data structures are set out. The dataframework module, which consists of interface index, the interface name analysis treeand the configure chain, is designed. The interface creation and interface delete module, which implements the unified process when interfaces are created or deleted, is workedout. The hot swap module is designed to take charge of the process in the user space andin the kernel when the router interface board is in hot swap.3) The WAN interface management software is implemented. At first, the interfacetype moduel should be designed, including the relationship with other modules, keydata structures and registration process. The command line module is designed in orderto realize the various commands belonged to the interfaces, including command lineregister and process. At last, the dedicated process is designed directed towards thespecial WAN interfaces such as E1/T1.
