Research About Interactive Sketch Generation Of Dunhuang Fresco

In the area of protecting cultural heritage, how to protect Dunhuang Fresco is ahot topic. Among many protection means, sketch generation is a special way. Thispaper proposes an interactive framework to generate sketch of Dunhuang Fresco,which involves users’ interaction to gain sketch map of fresco from a huge area ofDunhuang Fresco affected with noises(damage or loss).We divides the process of sketch generation into three parts, presenting a wholetool and framework to guide users to gain sketch from Dunhuang Fresco, consideringthe unique features of those frescos.Firstly, this paper defines what is structure of a fresco and its importance forsketch generation. Then we adopted hierarchical image segmentation technology togain frescos’ structure. With the involvement of global information it can minimizeaffection of global noises in the fresco. Under users’ control, the system can getsegmentation areas divided by edges with different strength level. That’s thehierarchical structure of frescos, which will be used in the second part.Then, for the extraction of sketches, we used the common technology of edgedetection. To avoid the affection from noises, we smoothed the fresco before usingcanny edge detection method to extract the sketch.Finally, aimed to complete the lost areas in the fresco, we captured many frescoelements from existing Dunhuang Fresco sketch drawing, encoding them into binaryedge descriptor and used those descriptors to build a database. When it comes to lostareas, users can search them int the database by category, gaining severalrecommendations from the database and use them to fill in the lost parts. At the meantime, the framework provides users some adjustment based on vectorization.
