| Books are the carriers of the heritage of civilization, publishing industry is closely related to the modern culture.Cultural construction is a key element of the development of the whole society. Wang Yunwu is an important figure in publishing history in China, who achieved great success that relied all on his own learning and as the leadership of the Commercial Press in China and in Taiwan for more than forty years. During this time, he published many kinds of classic books, which has a significant contribution to the popularization of culture, the enhancement of mental literacy, and the prosperity of modern education in the process of the transition to a modern society.Due to political reasons, Wang Yunwu moved to Taiwan in1949. There is not a reasonable assessment about his contribution in publication history. On the basis of study of his material, this study summarizes his lifelong publishing activities and generalizes his quality which includes his precious awareness of culture, unyielding cultural spirit and his vision of culture of the times. These can divided into three major thoughts of publication which focus on his books:mixing of the Chinese and Western culture, advocation of popularity of education, targeting high and high standards of editing.This study is divided into three parts which includes Wang Yunwu’s publishing career and publishing ideas. The first part is a brief summary of his dedication to the publishing career and the quality as a publisher. The second part discusses his three typical thoughts about publication. The first aspect introduces the balance of the traditional and western culture, which demonstrates "translation of world masterpiece""Guoxue basic books"; the second aspect analyzes his publishing idea of widespread of culture, which demonstrates his series books "a million library" and "Everyone library" and the "University series"; the third aspect explains publication thoughts of high starting point and high standard, which demonstrates by all his book series. The third part describes the enlightenment for the present publishers. |
