On the one hand, the function of the traditional pension model has become weaken, on the other hand, the elderly not only have to face a decline in social status, but also face the problems caused by the physical changes. At the same time, the great wealth of material life, resulting in their needs of the elderly also gradually turned to spiritual needs, this is particularly evident in the urban elderly.How to meet the spiritual needs of the elderly is an urgent problem. The article from the view of social work, seek professional approach of the use of group work to meet the spiritual needs of the elderly. The article introduces the basic situation of the service object firstly, then describes the main ways of the elderly spiritual life under the different self-care ability and classified the main content of the elderly spiritual life. In addition, the study found, their spiritual needs contains emotional needs, the demand for social interaction, cultural and recreational needs, and self-actualization needs. There are three main objective reasons due to the spiritual needs of the elderly, family reasons, economic reasons and health reasons. Through the analysis of the elderly basic research in the elderly institutions, the article made an assessment of the elderly spiritual needs and confirmed the target of the group activities. Finally, the design is divided into five sub-program of activities, and then assessed from two aspects of the process and results of the group activities. The process evaluation results show that the words, deeds and emotion of the elderly had taken part in the group activities have been greatly improved than the elderly who did not participate. The results were evaluated from six aspects, whether the sub-objectives were reached, the satisfaction of the crew on the activities of the entire group, whether the group members liked the leading way of the group worker, whether their spiritual needs were met, whether the group structure is reasonable and whether the group interaction was success. The article believes that the characteristics of the spiritual needs of the elderly showing the complexity and diversity. Short-term activities can only meet the part of spiritual needs of the elderly, can not fully meet the spiritual needs of the elderly. We need to mobilize various social resources for the establishment of a social support network to meet their spiritual needs. The higher of the level of the elderly spiritual needs is, the harder to meet. Therefore, I believe that in order to do the elderly group work better, we need do from the following two aspects, the first is to strengthen the supervision of counseling interns and supervise, the second is to establish a set of standardized and normalized system to meet elderly spiritual needs.
