The Study On Tsinghua University’s Board System-from1917to1929

The board of Tsinghua University was established in1917and canceled in1929. Itsurvived for twelve years in Tsinghua University.This board experienced the following fourstages in the twelve years, that is the establishment in1917,the first time reorganization in1920,the second time reorganization in1927,compulsory abolishment in1929.During thistime, several educational events with special characteristic of Tsinghua Universityhappened, namely “rejecting Zhang Yuquan and Luo Zhongyi”,“students’ strikes due toteachers’ asking for salary”,“thorough revolution”, and “appeal for independentsupervision from Ministry of Education and abolishment for board”.The process ofTsinghua board participating in this series of events, trends, revolutions, movements, alsofell into a decline along with the history.The main reason that the board being attacked wasthat their authority was too powerful to coordinate with other groups.At the beginning, thepresident, students’ union, professors’ union and the Council did not mean to cancel theboard, rather, they hope the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ameliorate the existingboard.But the Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not take seriously on their request, thusmissed the opportunity to balance the forces inside Tsinghua University. Finally, the boardwas abolished by fierce movement conducted by those groups.Students play an important role in “students’ strikes due to teachers’ asking for salary”,“thorough revolution”, and “appeal for independent supervision from Ministry ofEducation and abolishment for board”.For students,the Board extended its administrationfrom the fund to all school affairs gradually.It suppressed students’revolutionary passionand their confidence.Students feel disappointed at the“students’ strikes due to teachers’asking for salary”, despairing at “thorough revolution”,and expected the “appeal forindependent supervision from Ministry of Education and board’s abolishment”.In additionto students’ force,the president of Tsinghua, Jialun Luo also played a vital role inthe“appeal for independent supervision from Ministry of Education and board’sabolishment”and its success. Luo’s rich experience in politic and superb social skills made it possible to transfer the funds and Tsinghua University’s jurisdiction of Education andabolish the Board.
