The purpose of this study was to analyze and investigate characteristic and content in Chinese books of adolescent sex education since1978, and enrich the research in the field of sexology with methods in psychology, sociology and pedagogy.This study, with content analysis, comparative research and experiment method, aims at analyzing and studying general characteristics, contents and impact evaluations of adolescent sex education books(after reform and opening), providing suggestions to the writing principle, compiling and contents of Chinese adolescent sex education books, and putting forward the proper schemes of how we better carry out sex education with the help of adolescent sex education books.In2000, the books of adolescent sex education ushered the turning point in Publishing and distribution in China. Besides, publication counts is highest in the eastern parts in China. Book titles contain the word "sex" is43.7%; Only30.4%of the authors have sex education background; The male authors are significantly more than female authors in book titles contain the word "sex". The authors have professional background of public health, iatrology, sexology are more enlightened in sexual education. However the authors have professional background of pedagogy, psychology and literature are more conservative.The several features of the knowledge and information of adolescent sex education books are:(1) the information on adolescent physical health is abundant; the information on contraceptive and homosexuality, however, is generally absent in books;(2) the content of adolescent sexual psychology focuses on heterosexual intercourse;(3) the topics about sexual harassments towards men, parents divorce,"the other man/woman", and sex education to disabled children begin to be included;(4) few gender education is involved, and most of it is gender-differentiation education.The features of attitude towards and value of adolescent sex education books are:(1) positive attitudes towards puberty are shown in most books, while negative attitudes, such as fears and worries about adolescence appeared in a few books;(2) the general values of books tend to be conservative, and some books show the tendency of religious infiltration. From the evaluation of sex education of books, we can find out that the correct rate of sexual and reproductive health knowledge can be improved by short-term reading sex education books, but there is no statistically significant change in the attitude of young people towards sex.A large number of appearances of the Chinese books of Adolescent Sex educational level suggest that the increase of attention to sex educational level, but the problems of books and wide development space still remained. There are a few points to note:(1) basic principles are the keys to write the book;(2) pay attention to the subject plan of the book and the author’s background;(3) sexual and reproductive health, birth control and abortion, sexually transmitted diseases, AIDS, values, mental health, social gender should be contained in books of adolescent sex education;(4) pay attention to identify books, guide teenagers and use a variety of ways to carry out the sexual education.
