| With the rapid development of information technology, Information andCommunication Technology (ICT) has been applied to foreign language teachingwidely. Some studies from abroad and at home have shown that: compared withtraditional pedagogy, the application of ICT in foreign language teaching hasincomparable superiority. It can improve the efficiency of classroom teaching and thequality of English teaching, promote the students’ learning way and enhance thestudents’ ability of using language.ICT application to teaching has become a trend in the field of education. Ministryof Education attaches great importance to the application and development of ICT inteaching and takes a series of measures to promote education reform. A number ofresearchers at home and abroad have conducted research on the importance ofintegrating ICT into English teaching and teachers’ perceptions of ICT application toteaching. How to promote the teachers to use ICT effectively in teaching has become amajor research subject in the field of education. The thesis is to investigate theapplication of ICT in College English teaching in colleges or universities of HunanProvince, such as hardware infrastructures and software resources about ICT andteachers’ ICT skills and their practice, and analyze the factors influencing the currentsituation of ICT application to College English teaching. The subjects are120CollegeEnglish teachers and200students, and questionnaire, classroom observation andinterview are adopted to conduct the research.120and200questionnaires weredistributed to teachers and students respectively. The questionnaires collecting data hassome certain limitations. In order to make the data more scientific and reliable, thearticle takes classroom observation and interview as supplementary method to collectdata.5English teachers received face-to–face interview.The result of the survey shows that the current situation of ICT application toCollege English teaching is optimistic in most of universities and colleges. Themajority of universities and colleges have already equipped with ICT hardwareinfrastructures and software resources. However, ICT hardware infrastructures andsoftware resources in a small portion of universities and colleges are inadequate. Mostof teachers already have basic ICT skills and they apply ICT to teaching frequently, buttheir abilities to use sophisticated software like Flash, Authorware, Frontpage are low.On the whole, the phenomenon of ICT application to College English teaching is common, however, there are some major factors impeding ICT application to teaching.These factors are mainly divided into three aspects, hardware and software, teachersand students.In order to solve the above existing problems, the author puts forward thefollowing suggestions.:investing more money in improving the ICT hardware andsoftware; improving teachers’ ICT skills and cultivating more qualified teachers andfostering students self-learning ability with ICT. |
