Play is the dominant activity of childhood.It plays an important role in the children’s affective development, cognitive development, personality development and so on. Children’s playfulness is part of children’s personality traits.It not only manifests in play context, but also in situations in life and study and various other situations. How does playfulness develop in4-6years old children? Is it influenced by mothers’ personality traits? With these questions,this paper probes into the overall characteristics, age characteristics, gender characteristics of4-6years old preschool children’s playfulness, and the personality traits of these children’s mothers, and the relationship between4-6years old preschool children’s playfulness and their mothers’personality traits on the basis of research results in the domestic and overseas. Three hundred and fifty-eight randomly chosen4-6years old preschool children enrolled in two public kindergartens in the city of xi’an and their mothers participated in this study as research objects. The research tools of this study are Children’s Playfulness questionnaire for mothers and Children’s Playfulness questionnaire for preschool teachers revised from Barnett’ Children’s Playfulness Scale, and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Revised, Short Seale for Chinese, or EPQ—RSC, revised by revising working team of Department of Psychology at the University of Beijing. Children’s Playfulness questionnaire for mothers and Children’s Playfulness questionnaire for preschool teachers share common items and both have five key dimensions:physical spontaneity, social spontaneity, cognitive spontaneity, manifest joy, sense of humor. EPQ—RSC consists of four subscales:subscale of P(Psychoticism), subscale of E (extrovi—sion), subscale of N(neuroticism), subscale of L(Lie).Research of children’s playfulness used multiple evaluation collected from questionnaires of a child’s mother and teacher as the final evaluation. Research of children’s mothers’personality traits used group test to collect relevant information. Then in order to probe into the overall characteristics, age characteristics, gender characteristics of4-6years old preschool children’s playfulness, and the personality traits of these children’s mothers, and the relationship between4-6years old preschool children’s playfulness and their mothers’personality traits,the researcher used data analysis method. This study comes into the following research results: 1) The overall characteristics and performance of five key dimensions of4-6years old preschool children’s playfulness is above medium level.2)4-6years old preschool children’s results total of playfulness, physical spontaneity, social spontaneity and manifest joy all have significant differences among the age groups. But4-6years old preschool children’s cognitive spontaneity and sense of humor have no significant difference among the age groups. The development of4-6years old preschool children’s playfulness doesn’t seem to completely follow a linear upward trend.3)4-6years old preschool boys’ results total and each dimension score of playfulness are higher than4-6years old preschool girls’ results total and each dimension score of playfulness.4-6years old preschool boys and girls have significantly difference in results total and physical spontaneity, sense of humor of playfulness, and no significantly difference in social spontaneity, cognitive spontaneity, manifest joy of playfulness.4)4-6years old preschool children’s gender is significantly related to results total, physical spontaneity, sense of humor of playfulness.4-6years old preschool children’s age is positively related to results total, physical spontaneity, social spontaneity, cognitive spontaneity and manifest joy of playfulness.5)4-6years old preschool children’s mothers’ scores of subscale of E(extrovi—sion)are significantly related to results total, physical spontaneity, social spontaneity, cognitive spontaneity, manifest joy, sense of humor of playfulness. Mothers’ scores of subscale of N (neuroticism) are significantly related to results and physical spontaneity total of playfulness.4-6years old preschool children’s results total and each dimension score of playfulness have no significant correlation with their mothers’ scores of subscale of P (Psychoticism) and L (Lie).The researcher then put forward some suggestions for4-6years old preschool children’s development of playfulness and integrated development according to the research results.In the aspect of macroscopic, the educator and parents must pay attention to the significant value of play in children’s development and be concerned about their own mental health and healthy personality. At the same time they should exert their personality traits’ positive influence on children. First of all, educational institutions at all levels should focus on sound personality development of students, popularize and promote mental health education. Second, the state should improve the relief measures of the disadvantaged children whose mother have personality or psychological problems. Once again, psychological and educational practitioners should be concerned about and promote Positive Psychology which cares excellent quality and beautiful soul of mankind.Recommendations at the micro aspect are as follows.First, introverted mothers should try to treat their children with their own cheerful, positive, enthusiastic side, take children to participate in social activities as much as possible,make children know more people, and encourage children to make friends.Second, mothers tend to be emotionally unstable should properly control their emotions in front of children, strengthen the mother-child attachment relationship as far as possible with stable concern and love, create a good family atmosphere, and do not vent children to their stress from workplace or everyday life, at the same time be concerned about their own mental health. They should know how to adjust their emotions when they are emotionally unstable and prevent depression as well as other more serious psychological problems. Third, mothers should try to take the democratic family education method, should not spank or scold children arbitrarily. They should encourage children’s individual initiative to explore the world, analysis and guide children’s behavior, help and encourage children when they have problems that occur in the process of growth or learning, rather than lash out at them or try to control them.Fourth, parents and preschool teachers should be aware of the gender difference and age difference of children’s playfulness, guide children according to features of children’s playfulness. Fifth, mothers should create a rich and colorful playing environment and give enough time and space for children’s play. Sixth, mothers and teachers should lead by example. Seventh, mothers and preschool teachers should increase communication and cooperation to evaluate and guide the development of children’s playfulness properly.
