Reasoning is closely related to our daily life. It is the most basic and most important form of thinking when we hear, say, read or write. Because the rigor and high generality of mathematics, its effect on the development of students’ reasoning ability is incomparable and alternative.This paper mainly focuses on the development of mathematical reasoning ability for four parts of research. The first part of the study summarizes and comments on the development of reasoning ability. Giving the definition of mathematical reasoning ability. Building a theoretical foundation for the research on the subject. The second part of the study puts forward the theoretical assumptions about the level and the composition of mathematical reasoning ability. And, working out questionnaire for empirical research. The third part of study makes empirical research to explore, investigate and analyses. Including the overall development of mathematical reasoning ability of pupils, the analysis of individual differences of mathematical reasoning ability of pupils, and the correlation research of individual mathematical reasoning ability and academic achievement of pupils. The fourth part of the study, based on the main conclusion of the empirical research, combined with the actual situation of school teaching, proposing teaching strategy under the new curriculum to improve pupil’s mathematical reasoning ability. Then make a reflection and prospect.In this paper, by using the method of literature analysis, questionnaire test, theoretical analysis, the main conclusions of the study are as follows:(1) The development of mathematical reasoning ability is a gradual and successively constructive process. Therefore, the training of mathematical reasoning ability is a gradual process. Grade four or five of primary school is a critical period of development of mathematical reasoning ability.(2) With the higher grade, the difference between the program level group and intuitive level group is more and more obvious. Showing a polarization state. Mathematical reasoning ability of boys and girls is balanced on the whole. However, in the development of each component on each has its good points.(3) There is a strong positive correlation between students’ mathematical reasoning ability and academic achievement in Mathematics. The development of knowledge and ability are complementary to each other.Finally, based on the results of this research, combined with the examples of classroom teaching, some implications and strategies are put forward to cultivate mathematical reasoning ability of primary school students.
