The culture of Song Dynasty is the most gorgeous chapter inChinese history. Inheriting and developing the pith of traditionalChinese culture is the responsibility and aspiration ofpainting,while the painting of Song Dynasty is one of the mostsplendid contents. To understand painting, one should trulycomprehend the concept of painting, moreover, put it back to thebackground of Song Dynasty. As Fang wen says,“to research theexcellent paintings of Song,Yuan, Ming, Qing Dynasties, one could notgrasp if he doesn’t consider the traditions behind paintingfirst". Behaviors result from mind, group behavior lead to culturalphenomenon. The emergence of〃Song-culture〃 related to commonthought of its age. Art making does intensively reflect specificfruits of common thought of age. It is wise to perceive the essenceof Tang, Song culture through the transition of art style. Thus, toclarify painting notion of Song Dynasty and its basis, to dig itsrich connotation, all have far-reaching effects for inheriting anddeveloping the classics of traditional Chinese culture.In the whole cultural background of Song Dynasty, painting andliterature begin to combine,there comes the literarypainting. Painting is not only a tool for depicting, but also amanner to actualize oneself. Furthermore, plenty of literaryarticles appear, literary paintings of Song all jump to the peakfrom quantity to quality. Inscriptions as one of importantconstitute elements surpass the range of traditionalinscriptions, have unique aesthetic meanings. Cultures andinscriptions of Song have some links, varied literary articles ariseunder colorful cultures.
