Cultural Phenomenon Of Liangshan Yi Farming

The farming vocabulary and customs of Yi people in Liangshan area gradually acquires its regional features because of its unique natural environment and cultural circumstances.Structured on the methods and theories of language and culture, this thesis is a systemic study of Yi people’s farming language and culture in Liangshan area. Based on the previous studies and several personal field investigations, this thesis begins with the definition of language and culture, aims to generalize the features of Yi people’s farming vocabulary and culture, and further analyzes the uniqueness of those features.The thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter one gives a brief introduction about the method and theory applied in this study. The significance of this study is also stated in this chapter; chapter two goes to elaborate the development of Yi people’s farming in both the past and the present, which is based on the farming economy and supplemented by the animal husbandry economy. Chapter three discusses Yi people’s farming vocabulary and different farming situations it embodies in different period. Chapter four discusses Liangshan Yi people’s farming culture and etiquette from the perspectives of its etiquette, legends, proverbs and traditions developed from its farming. Chapter five is a comparative study of the farming culture and explains the religious features shown in the farming people’s natural worship.
