Collecting millions of custom vocabulary, "Chang Tan Sou" is a colloquial speech dictionary authored by Juren Yi Benlang in Qing Dynasty. It mainly researched the daily expressions in Ming and Qing Dynasty and aimed to seek and verify its origin, which offered valuable materials for custom vocabulary research. The book gathered 1,380 glossaries in four chapters in total. Chapter one and two were named "Elegant", while Chapter three and four were named "Custom". Considering as a kind of exceptional documentary evidence, those glossaries are massive in amount and extensive on content supporting the study of ancient Chinese speech.Discussing on five perspectives, this thesis focused on the compilation characteristic of the book "Chang Tan Sou" and its intellectual merit in the field of local linguistic. The first part was made of the introduction on authoring background, which briefly analysis the author, the process, and the version in order to achieve the objective exploration of some facts about this book. The second part quantitatively analyzed at the points of the objects, the authoring style and samples, and the pattern of word comprehension of the collections. Stressed on the classification of Elegant and Custom, this part further discussed the anticipatory conscious of classifying the objects as a primary methodology during the linguistic study at the ages of Ming and Qing. Part three concretely researched the advanced custom linguistic theory indicating in the book "Chang Tan Sou ". Under the specific research in the field of custom linguistic on the records of the classification of "Elegant" and "Custom" and the ascertainment over multi-field, the prosperous intension of custom speech is gradually uncovered. The fourth part contained the comparison with other types of dictionaries to release the potential value and the deficiencies of the book, including comparison of another dictionary named "Source of the Custom Speech" authored at the same period and the observation on the contribution to the compiling of the "Unabridged Chinese Dictionary". The last part was a general comment on the value of the book through systematic study. It briefly and objectively analyzed the research conscious on the custom linguistic of the author, and agreed to the perspectiveness of the methodology of classifying the elegant glossaries and the custom ones during the compiling of the book, also, raised some suggestions on several points for further discussion. As a dictionary of custom speech, the intellectual merit of "Chang Tan Sou " cannot be ignored. Among the magnificent amount of the collected vocabulary, some of them are still being used in daily communication nowadays. However, due to the limitation of the little copies and some other conditions of the book itself, there is rare academic study on the book from nether domestic nor abroad since its publication, even no entire systematic research project on it till now. Hence, there exists many arguments need to be researched and discussed further.In addition, "Chang Tan Sou" provided significant documentary evidence for the later generation understanding the social language and life in Ming and Qing Dynasty.
