The lake area in Beijing called Shi Cha Hai was a scenic culture district in the Yuan Dynasty through the years of the Republic of China. Members of the well-educated, high culture class from across China would meet there and engage in leisure activities such as fine dining and excursions. This research examines these activities during the said period, with the objectives being a) to analyze the changes that Shi Cha Hai went through in terms of its natural as well as cultural-societal landscapes and how those changes impacted on the cultural activities there; and b) to answer some questions regarding these activities and the people engaged in them including who they were, what they did and in what venues they did it. This paper will look at some of these typical activities as examples and explore the legacy, if any, of the old time partying at Shi Cha Hai.Of the seven parts:Introduction offers the rationale of this research and the knowledge and understandings already achieved in this area of study. The time frame, the geographical scope, the demographics that this research is concerned with and the subject matter for this research are defined in Introduction.Chapter1reviews the changes Shi Cha Hai went through in terms of its natural and cultural-societal landscapes, with an emphasis on how those landscapes interplayed with the cultural activities that took place at Shi Cha Hai in the Yuan through the republican period.Chapter2focuses on some of the largest and most important activities, e.g. the Party at Wan Chun Yuan, the Grape Club, the Shikan poetry club and the banquets at Hui Xian Tang.Chapter3examines the demographics of these Shi Cha Hai activities, what they did in these activities and where they took place. It also explores the nature and significance of these activities.Chapter4looks into the parties at Lu Shui Ting in the mid Qing Dynasty and the gatherings of the faculty and students of Fu Jen Catholic University during the republican period.Chapter5attempts to answer the question of how cultural activities at Shi Cha Hai helped shape the scholarly interaction between different ethnic groups, the development of the cultural signature of the western Inner Beijing, and the social drive for changes in modern Beijing.Conclusion recaps the findings of this paper.Cultural activities at Shi Cha Hai helped the development of arts of all the ethnic groups involved, the formation of the local culture and even social advances. They came down in history as a symbol of the culture of Beijing and the fountainhead of that culture.
