Objective:Explore and analyse the selection of acupoints to treat insomnia with moxibustion in acient and modern literature to provide reference for clinical moxibustion treatment of insomnia.Method:Retrieve electronic journal Encyclopedia of Traditional Chinese Medicine, select important and representative monographs on acupuncture and moxibustion and ancient comprehensive medical books containing designed chapters of acupuncture and moxibustion, excerpt relevant records of acupuncture treatise for insomnia, and classify the points in the literature. Entry them into Microsoft Excel for statistical analysis.Retrieve the literatures about moxibustion treatment for insomnia which have been published and collected in the CNKI database in the recent10years (1992—2013). Classify the points in the literature. Entry them into Microsoft Excel for statistical analysis.Results:1Nine ancient medical books are obtained, in which54points are involved. The points are distributed mainly in Stomach Meridian, Governor Vessel, Bladder Meridian and Spleen Meridian. According to the spatial distribution, the quantity of the points on the lower extremities accounts for25.9%, on the chest and abdomen22.2%, on the back22.2%, on the upper extremities20.4%, on the head and face accounts for9.3%.2Ninety-seven modern literatures are obtained, in which64points are involved. The points are distributed mainly in Bladder Meridian, Governor Vessel, Stomach Meridian and Conception Vessel. High frequency points for treating insomnia are Baihui(47times),Yongquan(36times),Shenshu(22times),Pishu(21times),Zusanli(19times),Xishu(18times),Ganshu(15times). According to the spatial distribution, the quantity of the points on the back accounts for36.8%, on the head and face accounts for22.8%, on the lower extremities for19.3%, on the upper extremities for10.5%, on the upper extremities for10.5%. 3The points which are both in ancient and modern literature include: Zusanli,Sanyinjiao,Yinlingquan,Shenmen,Xinshu,Danshu,Shenshu,Feishu,Taixi,N eiguan,Taichong,Danzhong,Qihai,Shendao,Baihui and Lingtai.4Compared with the ancient literature, there is a decrease in the number of acupoints of the Lung, Small Intestine, Triple Energizer, Spleen and Stomach Meridian, but an apparent increase in the number of acupoints of the Bladder Meridian and Governor Vessel in the modern literature.Conclusion:Ancient and modern physicians are quite different in the selecting meridians and acupoints when treating insomnia with moxibustion. Ancient doctors paid attention to regulate and govern the spleen and stomach, so they often took the points of the spleen and stomach Meridian, and commonly used points including Zusanli, Sanyinjiao, Tianshu, etc. However, doctors nowadays emphasize regulating and governing heart and brain spirit, so they often take the points of the Bladder Meridian and Governor Vessel, and commonly used points including Baihui,Shengshu,Pishu,Xinshu,Ganshu,etc.
