Objective:We aim to observe the improvement of several related symptoms in perimenopausal and menopausal women with mild and moderate anxiety (according to traditional Chinese medicine theory, it is mainly caused by the disharmony of the heart and the kidney)and the changes of serum estrogen, FSH and progesterone levels after using the modified Qingxinzishen Concoction and Wuling Capsule, so as to examine the therapeutic effect of these two drugs used as a whole and the drug safety in clinical practice.Methods30patients who met the inclusion criteria enrolled in this experiment and were treated with the combination of the modified Qingxinzishen Concoction and Wuling Capsule in6weeks. During this period, we carefully observe the subjects’overall health and to which degree their related symptoms could be relieved by these medicine via comparing the scores of each one of the symptomatic groups in the Greene Climacteric Scale, the serum female sex hormones levels before and after treatment and also the total scores of the Hamilton Anxiety Scale before, in the middle of and after treatment. Results (1)The clinical effective rate was40.00%.(2)The changes of the total scores of the Hamilton Anxiety Scale before, in the middle of and after treatment:the average total score dropped in the course of time and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.01).(3)The changes of the scores of three items relating to insomnia in the Hamilton Anxiety Scale before and after treatment:the average score declined and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.01).(4)The changes of the total scores and the separating symptomatic group scores of the Greene Climacteric Scale before and after treatment: the average score of the subjects of the1st symptomatic group went down after the treatment and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.01). The average score of the subjects of the2nd symptomatic group went down after the treatment as well but the difference was not statistically significant (P>0.01). The average score of the subjects of the3rd symptomatic group went down after the treatment and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). The average score of the subjects of the4th symptomatic group dropped after the treatment and the difference did not prove to be statistically significant (P>0.05).(5)The changes of the serum female sex hormones levels:the level of the serum estrogen grew on average after the treatment but the difference was not at all statistically significant (P>0.05). The level of the serum FSH increased on average after the treatment and the difference was not statistically significant (P>0.05). The level of the serum progesterone rose on average after the treatment but the difference was not at all statistically significant as well (P>0.05). However, we luckily observed an upward trend in the levels of the female sex homones.(6)The drug safety analysis:the hepatic and kidney functions were measured before and after the treatment and there was no adverse effect found during this trial. Conclusions Patients who took the combination of the modified Qingxinzishen Concoction and the Wuling Capsule can have their associated symptoms relieved. These drugs can effectively lower the degrees of anxieties in perimenopausal and menopausal women and also that of other symptoms relating to anxiety, such as insomnia. They also demonstrated an effect on correcting vasomotor dysfunctions including hot flushes and excessive sweating. However, no apparent therapeutic effect was found in treating climacteric somatic symptoms, such as a loss of sex interest. The levels of female sex hormones did not show any significant improvement after the treatment as well although we did observe an upward trend on average. The combination of the two drugs may be put to clinical use because of a fairly high effective rate and a lack of apparent adverse effect.
