Security Research In The Late Tang Dynasty Jianghuai River

During the Tang Dynasty, Jianghuai area was abundant with rivers, and water transportation was advanced. The River Road business converged, and the trade was frequent, which led to the further development of agriculture and handicraft industry. However, it also contributed to the growth of the coastal town. The developed river traffic made the river transportation security issues became prominent. The safety of river was not only caused by the meteorological disasters, river navigation conditions and other environmental factors; but also by the river bandits plunder, local separatist forces and other factors. In order to maintain their rule, the Tang central government adopted a series of measures to guarantee safe and smooth, such as strengthening management, water conservancy, against thieves, elimination of separatism and so on; and the river safety awareness was also rising, they or in faith for sustenance, or draw on the advantages and avoid disadvantages in summing up experience. In the late Tang Dynasty, river traffic safety was not only related to the development of Jianghuai area itself, was also closely linked with Tang regime’s survival. In this case, the study of river transport safety in Jianghuai area during later Tang Dynasty, can not only reveal the relationship between transportation and regional economic development, but also can reveal a series of social problems by the central and local relations behind security.
