The spatial structure of urban system refers to the spatial relationship such asdistribution,connection and combination among cities or towns in the same urbansystem.Reasonable spatial structure of th urban system is conducive to the rational allocation ofresources in the region, optimal adjustment of the industry as well as the healthy development ofthe town, so as to promote the scientific development of the region’s economic and social. Withthe advance of industrialization and urbanization,Pizhou City, Jiangsu Province, one of theeconomic and social development is lagging behind the region, is urging to optimize the spatialstructure of the city’s urban system, in order to realize the coordinated development of regionaleconomy and society,.It is an essential task to research on the structure of urban system forPiZhou.With the help of the GIS platform,this paper tries to use qualitative and quantitative method,to explore the level of the Pizhou urban system scale structure, functional structure, geographicalspace structure and transport network structure,and to summarize the current situation of thespatial structure of urban system of PiZhou. Based on this, the paper proposed on someoptimization strategies about the spatial structure of urban system.The article first make a summarization on the basic theories of spatial structure of urbansystem,including the central place theory, growth pole theory, urban and rural co-ordinate theoryand fractal theory,to explore the guiding significance for the optimization on spatial structure ofPiZhou urban system.,as well as to build the theoretical framework.of the thesis. Secondly,theoretical generalization of GIS technology in urban system planning and studies are followed,as well as the analyst about the historical context and the environment of the study area, thedevelopment of urban system. Content on spatial structure and optimization of the urbansystem,is the core of this article. First, the use of the built-up area of population and built districtarea of dual-index comprehensive method to study Pizhou City town level scale structure,followed by the use of location entropy method Pizhou City domain of industry functions andXuzhou City, Jiangsu Province, the relevant counties conduct contrast, again based on the regionfunctions of the county town type combination of qualitative and quantitative methods ofresearch. Geographical study of the spatial structure, the use of GIS spatial point pattern method,quantitative study on the state of the overall distribution of the county towns, and then based onfractal theory principle, to explore the urban spatial concentration and spatial correlationcharacteristics of the study area. Finally, the use of GIS network analysis functions to construct the road network of the study area, the traffic to various towns reachability research goals toexplore the city’s urban network structure development status.This paper summarizes the characteristics of the study area, the spatial structure of the urbansystem and the problems on the basis of the above study, analysis of internal and externalopportunities faced by the town system, and the guiding principles that optimization work shouldfollow, and then proposed the stragies of optimization on spatial structure of urban system inPiZhou.Point-axis model would be a better selection in the near future and the core-hinterlandstrategic model woud be better in long term.
