Chinese figure painting as an art form in the traditional painting system is produced matured at an earlier stage and has been improved later, which occupies an important place in the Chinese painting history.The painting of beauty in Tang Dynasty is the symbol of the prosperity of figure painting, which mainly describes the actual life activities of the female as the main painting subjects. In this period, the fine and plumb women figures as well as the gorgeous costumes and ornaments are adored and fully developed.A sound and rich basis for further development of costumes and paintings is presented in the multiple social ideologies in Tang Dynasty, and simultaneously the openness, freedom, social fashion as well as the boldness of demonstrating and apprecting feminity are reflected. People in Tang Dynasty worship chubby figure, curved eyebrows and round cheeks, known as Yuhuan Fei. The noble women’s life and emotional appeal represented by typical costumes and ornaments in the paintings of beauty are the main characteristics of art works in Tang Dynasty. The costumes are diverse in styles, gorgeous colours, full of natural graces and vitality, and rich in expressive forces. Clothing art aesthetics, the same as other art forms, the basic elements composition and aesthetic subject’s perception are included. Lines, colours, patterns and textures constitute the costume shapes, visual characteristics, aesthetic apprecitation as well as the aesthetic senses of rhythm, order, rhyme and harmony formed on the basis of elements mentioned above.The present study is made mainly on clothing styles, colors, fabrics and makeup look in the paintings of beauty in Tang Dynasty. And analysis of the visual esthetics of the costumes will be done on the basis of the principles of modelling laws. The article consists of four parts, and the research methodologies, such as literature retrieval and image analysis, are applied:The first part, with the social development status of Tang Dynasty as background, explores the style formation of the painting of beauty concerning the elements, such as society, politics, culture and individual.aesthetic psychology.The second part, from the perspective of clothing, depicts the costumes in the paintings of beauty, sumarizes the styles of the costumes and makes analysis of characteristics and the composition factors, which set stages for Part Three and Part FourThe third part explains the relationship between costume language and painting language, and on the basis of the rules of formal beauty analyzes the formation laws and demonstration pattern of the costume language employed in the paintings of beauty.The fourth part puts forward the artistic conception of dress and analyzes the processing techniques of seeking content from forms.The expression of forms in costumes mainly involves the transformation from ideaology to specific image and leads to the rich expressionist art formed in the costume painting language in the elements of point, line, face, colour and so on. The expression of forms in costumes mainly involves the transformation from ideaology to specific image and leads to the rich expressionist art formed in the costume painting language in the elements of point, line, face, colour and so on.With the analysis made above, this paper suggests that costume plays an important role in the paintings of beauty in Tang Dynasty and the expression of costume form aesthetics is relatively independent.Basic analysis of the elements of costumes in combination with the illustrates is applied in order to obtain the costume painting means that people have mastered.
