The Research On The Narrative Of NHK Documentaries On Chinese Themes

In recent years, as China’s economy development, China has overtaken Japan to become the second largest economic entity in the world. More and more countries pay close attention to China. In the international market, documentaries with the theme of Chinese factors are getting increasingly favored. NGC, BBC, Discovery, NHK and other foreign documentary production agencies have produced documentaries about China, such as The Beautiful China co-produced by BBC and CCTV, Vision of China by PBS, Discovery Atlas of China by Discovery, and The Rise of China by CBS. NHK, as the TV authority of China’s neighborhood, has produced lots of documentaries on Chinese themes. Documentaries on Chinese themes are getting concerned, partly because of the rise of China, partly because of the Chinese complex condition. Nowadays, China’s reform has entered a crucial stage, the new social strata appears, that comes with the conflicts of interest between the various sectors intensifying and the social contradictions with long-term accumulation increasingly prominence. The current China applies a lot of fresh material for foreign documentary shooting institutions.NHK produced a number of documentaries on Chinese themes, relating to history, culture, geography, economy, and social.NHK shoots the most documentaries about China among the overseas TV institutions. Not only the quantity superiority, in terms of quality, regardless of the narrative, image, depth, and breadth, NHK documentaries also have reached a very high level.NHK shoots China-related documentaries from its perspective, so how do they reflect China? Why do they reflect China in that way? What are the inspiration and reference for us? In this paper, the questions above are deserved to be answered. With the theoretical background of narratology, the paper selected NHK documentaries on Chinese themes as the research object, tried to analyze the documentaries from the perspective of narrative, narrative language, narrative characteristics to figure out some findings.
