Translationese refers to the translation that simply transplants or mechanically converts the surface structure of the source text. Its essence is a hybrid language or a mixed language, namely, the so-called pidgin. Translationese can be classified as "benign translationese" and "non-benign translationese". The non-benign translationese affects the delivery of the source language and disobeys the rules of the target language while the benign translationese has positive effect, which can inject new energy into the target language.During the English-Chinese consecutive interpreting, translationese occurs frequently. As for interpreters, Chinese is their mother tongue, but even if they are experts in Chinese, they also produce some translationese when interpreting from English to Chinese, which doesn’t conform to the codes of the Chinese. In general, translationese is caused by the linguistic and the cultural differences between Chinese and English. The present study researches the translationese. Specifically, it studies its linguistic and cultural causes and the relevant solutions. Linguistically, translationese is mainly caused by the differences in words, sentence pattern and word order, which can be avoided by addition, conversion of word classes, division, reverse translation and other translation skills. Culturally, translationese is mainly caused by cultural blank and cultural conflict, which can be overcome by literal translation with notes, free translation and other translation skills. After specific translation skills are put forward, examples are invited to make the conclusion more convincing.By combing theory with practice, the present study provides interpreters, especially beginners in interpreting, with some reference to improve the translation quality and decline the occurrence frequency of translationese. |
