In order to be better qualified for interpreting tasks in various fields, interpreters should master not only necessary language competence, but also a wide range of extralinguistic knowledge.Studies by domestic and foreign scholars show that extralinguistic knowledge plays an important role in all aspects of interpreting and that it has a positive correlation to interpreters’ performance.Based on previous studies, the thesis starts from summarizing the definition of extralinguistic knowledge and its general impact on interpreting. Then it presents a case study of the simulation of Putin’s press conference on the second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, which was fulfilled by the author, aiming to analyze the positive impact of extralinguistic knowledge and the problems caused by lack of extralinguistic knowledge in Russian-Chinese consecutive interpreting. The press conference involved a wide range of topics. As the author was not familiar with some topics, the fluency and accuracy of interpretation were decreased. So the study focuses on analyzing the problems that occurred due to the lack of extralinguistic knowledge during the simulation conference.Major problems are improper pauses, repetitions, omissions and false interpretation. Finally,on the basis of case analysis, the thesis concludes with providing approaches to coping with the lack of extralinguistic knowledge in consecutive interpreting:(a)enhancing basic knowledge reserve, including extensively learning mainstream topics and building a complete knowledge system;(b)strengthening preparation;(c)adopting coping strategies during interpreting, including grasping the main idea and paying attention to speakers’ body language;(d)keep a learning journal.
