A Study Of EC Translation Of Boredom From The Perspective Of Functionalist Skopos Theory

Functionalist Skopos Theory has great significance in guiding translation practice. This paper, under the guidance of Skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule, taking the translation of Peter Toohey’s Boredom as an example, discusses various practical translation methods based on the text feature.Boredom is a book about the inner world of human beings, which conveys positive information of boredom and persuades people to treat boredom properly and live a positive life. This paper discusses many difficulties in the book’s translation, such as the translation of the long sentences, allusions and titles of literary works. In order to achieve the translation purpose, the translator puts the expected purpose of translation as the first principle all along. Therefore, many methods (such as construe, reverse, division, literal translation, literal translation with notes added, paraphrase etc.) are used to make a better translation. The paper fully proves that translation doesn’t mean to be entirely equivalent, and the translation purpose comes first all the time. That is to say, the kind of translation strategies and methods to be adopted should be based on the purpose of translation. So, translators should adopt flexible methods to translate and be released from the concepts of absolute faithfulness and equivalence in traditional translation theories, and the focus should be on the purpose of translation.
