Teaching material takes a dominant terrace in discipline construction. During the course of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, the compiling quality of the teaching material decides whether the whole of teaching works; Thus, teaching material of this subject has been a key issue for numbers of experts and scholars in recent years. As learning Chinese is becoming more and more welcomed in the world, the scale of the learners is keeping expanding; Consequently, their demands on the teaching material is raising higher at the same time. As an entering textbook, the significance of elementary teaching material is of high priority. This thesis is to compare and analyze two existing textbooks New Standard Chinese and Practical Chinese in terms of their vocabulary, grammar, discourse and practice, summarizing the similarities and differences and proposing several suggestions on composing teaching material for Chinese language beginner.This dissertation consists of six parts. In the first part, the author will elaborate on the research significance, present domestic and abroad study situations and research methodology. In the second part, the author will compare these two teaching materials in terms of vocabulary arrangement, vocabulary order and the English version of vocabulary. More suggestions will be made in this part. The third part is a comparative study of two teaching material’grammar section. In terms of the range of the grammar, editing and setting of grammar and interpretation of grammar in two books. In the fourth part, the author will compare these two materials in terms of the passage topic and style. The fifth part will propose viable suggestions for teaching material writers after observing the practice section in two books. In the last part, the author, based on theoretical principles, will put forward some opinions on how to improve the quality of future teaching materials on Teaching Chinese as a foreign language.New Standard Chinese and Practical Chinese, as famous teaching materials, have their own merits and demerits. By this study, the author intends to shed light on how to compile future teaching materials on Teaching Chinese as a foreign language for beginners.
