A Study Of Metaphor Translation In The Golden Notebook From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

Nida’s functional equivalence theory emphasizes readers’ response, namely thereaders’ response of the translated text should basically correspond with that of theoriginal text. There was no complete equivalent translation. Translation is toreproduce the equivalent in the target language which is the closest to the message ofthe original language, meaning is the first and style is the second. Metaphor isubiquitous, in our language and thought. Metaphor is not only a kind of languagephenomenon, but also a common way of thinking and cognitive means. Metaphor isan important means to cognize the world for human.This thesis tries to analyze the metaphors in The Golden Notebook from theperspective of functional equivalence theory, discuss the expression and function ofthe metaphors in the book, and analyze their translation strategies. There are a largenumber of metaphors in the book, this paper divided the metaphors into threecategories, namely body metaphor, image metaphor and animal metaphor, discussedtheir embodiment in the translation of the book, and analyzed the translation strategiesthe translator used when he translated the metaphors. Through the study of this paper,the author sums up some translation methods and translation strategies of metaphorsto make a contribution to the translation of metaphors in literary works.
