The material for the E-C translation practice are two chapters, namely,“Context and Metaphorical Creativity” and “Metaphor and Context”,from Z.Kovecces’ s monograph Where Metaphor Comes From, which studies the role that context plays in determining the production of metaphor.By applying Functional Equivalence Theory, the report examines the features of the source text at the lexical level, syntactic level and textual level, respectively. At the lexical level, the author applies different translation methods such as annotation, semantic extension, and conversion to translate proper nouns and other general terms. At the syntactic level, the author summarizes how to translate long and complex sentences. Finally, for the sake of creating a coherent text, the emphasis is primarily placed on referential cohesion and lexical cohesion at textual level. The thesis can be divided into five chapters: Task Description,Translation Process,Theoretical Basis,Case Study and Conclusion.Chapter One is Task Description, which covers translation significance, the source text selection as well as the nature and characteristics of the source text;Chapter Two is introduction of Translation Process, which involves pre-translation preparation, translation work as well as post-translation editing;Chapter Three is Theoretical Basis, which introduces the main contents and key points of Functional Equivalence theory;Chapter Four is the significant part of the report, case analysis, which is primarily conducted following the Functional Equivalence theory at the lexical, syntactic and textual level with specific translation techniques;Chapter Five is the Conclusion, which mainly illustrates reflections of translation work and future improvement.By virtue of working on translation practice, the translator has a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of academic translation. Before the translation, the relevant language information should be studied in-depth so as to overcome the language barrier and make the translation in line with the source text in style and meaning.Furthermore, the translator summaries the difficulties and deficiencies encountered in translation practice, and the experience and reflection from it,hoping to effectively improve the translation competence. |
