On Omission In Simultaneous Interpretation Of High Level Conference Speeches From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence

With the method of theoretical and experimental studies, this thesis explores, under the framework of Daniel Gile’s Effort Model,the effect of concise production on the performance of simultaneous interpreters from the perspective of functional equivalence and the application of according tactics by students.It starts with Daniel Gile’s Effort Model to demonstrate the necessity and importance of making the production concise in interpreting. Then the working memory mechanism, functional equivalencetheory and its according simplification tactics are introduced with concrete examples to highlight the effectiveness of functional equivalence related tactics in transmitting information.The theoretical analysis is followed by an experimental study about the performance of six student interpreters of GSTI trained for five months in SI in interpreting a speech by premier Li Keqiangon May15th2013and another by UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon on October21st2010. And then quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis are conducted to explore the effect of concise tactics.Findings of the study demonstrate that the tactics of concise production applying the functional equivalence prove to be necessary and effective in improving the quality of SI interpretation by omitting redundant information and saving time for interpreters who are already under huge pressure.
