A Comparison Of Two Translated Versions Of Lady Windermere’s Fan From The Perspective Of Feminist Translation Theory

In the1980s, feminist translation theory, represented by Luise von Flotow, Sherry Simon, etc., emerged in Canada. Theses advocators of feminist translation theory not only broaden the horizon of translation studies, but also dedicate themselves to the practice of feminist translation.Despite being a male author, Oscar Wilde’s work Lady Windermere ’s Fan implies feminist ideas, and challenges traditional ethics. However, the existing researches on the translation of Wilde’s works are based on skopos theory, domesticating translation and post-colonial translation theory, and not much attention is paid to feminist ideas in Wilde’s works.To fill the vacuum, this thesis will compare the two translated versions of Lady Windermere’s Fan by Shen Xingren and Yu Kwang-chung from the perspective of feminist translation theory, and the results of the comparison will be classified into four categories, i.e., hijacking, prefacing and footnoting, preserving the feminist ideas suggested in the source text, and highlighting female features. This thesis combines qualitative research with quantitative research. A selected group of readers will answer a questionnaire to provide feedback on the two translated versions. The results of the survey will be analyzed.The research leads to a conclusion that the translated version by Shen Xingren gives a bigger voice to feminist ideas, and is better received by readers.
