A Study Of Shen Xingren’s Literary Translation

At the beginning of the 20 th century in China,translated literature was promoted as a tool of enlightenment and instruction.At the same time,the first native female translation group appeared in China,and women were pushed to the front of Chinese history,there are Chen Hongbi,Xue Qiying,Wu Ruonan and so on.In the group of male translators,they break through the traditional female taboos and open up a new artistic field in the translation literature.In the process of literature collation,the author finds that as the first female translator of Oscar Wilde’s Lady Windermere’s Fan,Shen has not been paid enough attention to.Shen Xingren was one of the outstanding female drama translators in the Early Period of modern literature,and his translation of Hendrik Willem van Loon’s The Story of Mankind aroused a‘Fanglong Craze’ in China at that time.In addition to drama translation,there are prose poetry,novels and other translated literary works,in the Group of female translators at that time made outstanding contributions.This thesis takes Shen’s literary translation as its research object,and through historical data mining,analyzes the factors that influence his translation,such as his educational background,co-translators and publishing position,etc.,this paper Explores Shen’s translation language,selection of materials,translation strategies and translation thoughts,and explores the characteristics of his literary translation,with a view to playing a Tossing out a brick to get a jade gem role in the study of literary translation activities of other female translators.This thesis is divided into four parts:The first part is about the general situation and causes of female translators in modern times.This chapter introduces the General Situation and causes of the first native female translator in the early 20 th century,and explains the reasons of the formation of the female translator group from the aspects of the women’s movement,the establishment of the women’s school and the market demand of the publishing and communication industry.The second part is the preparation and publication of Shen Xingren’s literary translation.In this chapter,first of all,starting from the educational background,Shen Xingren explores the influence of his own country’s education and study abroad experience on his translation,for example,the relationship between Tao Menghe’s working experience and the publication of Shen Xinren’s translations,as well as the influence of his close friends Xu Zhimo and Hu Shih on Shen’s translations,the relationship between the style change of the translated works published in periodicals and the cultural trend of thought at that time.The third part,the characteristics of Shen Xingren’s literary translation.This chapter analyzes Shen Xinren’s translation works from the perspectives of the subject matter,language,translation strategies and translation thoughts of the translated works,in line with People’s advocacy of translating famous works,the translation language consciously uses vernacular,and there are new words and dialect words in the translated works,from the perspective of "creative treason",this paper analyzes the use of domestication and foreignization in Shen’s translation,and finally,from the perspective of translation thoughts,probes into the prominent female consciousness in Shen’s translation works and the translator’s realistic view in the selection of materials,combining popular science with humanistic care.The fourth part is about the value and limitation of Shen Xingren’s literary translation.In the group of drama translation,Shen Xingren’s skillful use of vernacular language in translation was regarded as a model work in vernacular translation at that time.From the point of view of the limitation of translation,due to the limitation of the translator’s language mastery,Shen Xingren has translated western literary works other than English into Chinese according to the English versions,in the process of language conversion,readers’ reading has produced a certain reading barrier and lost the "fidelity" of the source language.From the perspective of stage performance,Shen Xingren’s drama translation works are more suitable for reading,and there is still a gap between them and the actual stage scripts.The appendix contains a complete catalogue of Shen’s translated works,including translated plays,novels and selected non-literary works,which are available to other scholars.
