This is a translation project report on Memory：A Very Short Introduction, ofwhich Chapter6, The Seven Ages of Man and Chapter7, Improve Memory are thesource texts. The author uses simple terms to discuss the essence, classification anddevelopment of the memory. By comparing the memory of different ages, the authorexplores the impact of disease and aging on human memory, and how do themnemonics help us improve memory. The project report uses Hans Vermeer’sSkopos theory as theoretical basis, the core principles of which are as following: thepurpose of the whole translation should be placed at first during the translatingprocess; the translation text should be produced basing on the target reader or onsome certain purposes.Memory：A Very Short Introduction belongs to Very Short Introductions fromOxford University, each of which elaborates a specific topic and aims to introduce anew filed to people in the simplest and most understandable way. The direction ofthis series agrees with Hans Vermeer’s Skopos theory which means the translatormust understand the needs and expectations of the recipient. Thus the translation textcan be accepted by the readers with target language. As in the Skopos theory,translation strategies and methods must be determined by the intended purpose of thetranslation. In the translation, the translator always complied with the theory andadopted a series of translating methods during the process, such as resolution,domestication, addition and subtraction and so on, striving to explain the memorysubject to readers in simple terms.
