A Study On Wall-paintings/frescoes In Changsha City And Their Problems

With the rapid growth of Changsha’s comprehensive strength, wall-painting/fresco as a form of public art are playing an increasingly important role in the improvement of urban soft environment, communication of urban culture, elevation of city image, and representation of human spirit. Therefore, it is of great significance to study the current situation and aesthetic problems of wall-paintings/frescoes in Changsha.The study probes into such issues as the current situation, implementation, development, and problems of wall-paintings/frescoes in Changsha in perspectives of environmental art, pubic art, and urban environmental aesthetics. Based on relevant theories of artistic design, the study lays emphasis on the problems and aesthetic appreciation of wall-paintings/frescoes in Changsha by means of contextual inquiry, questionnaire survey, and interview. The study also sheds light on the causes for problems of wall-paintings/frescoes in Changsha, countermeasures, restriction of space environment on wall-paintings/frescoes, and importance of wall-painting/fresco decoration to space environment.On the basis of literature review of wall-paintings/frescoes, and related concepts, research methods, objectives, significance, framework, and background information were proposed in chapter one. The second chapter discusses wall-paintings/frescoes and urban environment. Theoretical construct is the main work, including the relationships between wall-paintings/frescoes and urban environmental art, between wall-paintings/frescoes and urban cultural value, as well as between wall-paintings/frescoes and environment. The restriction of urban environment on wall-paintings/frescoes, and the impact of wall-paintings on space environment are pointed out. The survey on wall-paintings in Changsha was conducted in chapter three. Comprehensive analysis is done on problems of wall-paintings/frescoes in Changsha, reasons for the problems, the market for wall-paintings/frescoes in Changsha, etc. This section indicates that different space environment needs corresponding wall-painting/fresco languages. In the fourth chapter, problems of wall-paintings/frescoes in Changsha are analyzed, consisting of problem verification and strategy of mural implementation. In addition, countermeasures are proposed, suggesting that a sound social system, scientific and rational management methods, and effective incentives are crucial to the creation of high-quality wall-paintings/frescoes. The last chapter is a case study. Problem verification is performed by linking with a lot of cases. Design concept, design ideas, construction management, and design evaluation are indicated during the design of a wall-painting/fresco in urban public environment.
