Since mid and late of1990s the development of vocational education has met manydifficulties and setbacks. In the secondary vocational schools quality and quantity ofenrolment has been gradually decreased and students show that different personal qualitiesand basic literacy levels, low learning abilities, low learning motivations and lowself-confidences. These factors severely hinder the improvement of education and teachingquality of schools.As the important way of imparting knowledge to students, teaching methods play a greatrole in schools’ all-round development and students’ personal development. At the same time,as the good assistant of graduates engaging in specific work, it is also important to theirpersonal development. This research aims to try implementing the hierarchical teaching in theworkplace English class in a secondary vocational school so as to test the feasibility andeffectiveness of this method. The experiment has been done for twenty weeks in the secondterm. The subjects in this experiment were42students of the class enrolled in2011whosemajor was Business Service and Management in the Senior Technical School of Shijiazhuang.In this experiment, according to their achievements of Hotel Service English examination inthe end of the first term, these students were divided into three groups, Group A, Group Band Group C and the proportion of three groups was2/5/3. The students were taught HotelService English by the hierarchical teaching in the second term. The research methods arequestionnaire method, test method, interview method and observation method.The thesis involves five chapters. Chapter one is an introduction of the thesis and itincludes background of research, questions of research, purpose and significance of theresearch and structure of the thesis. Chapter two introduces relevant theories of thehierarchical teaching. Chapter three is the experiment and that describes in details how toimplement the hierarchical teaching in the workplace English teaching. Chapter four analyzesthe experiment results. Chapter five discusses the research findings and points out thelimitations of the research. Then, the researcher proposes some suggestions for the future research and draws the conclusion of this experiment. The research results shows that thestudents’ achievements have been improved greatly, the learning enthusiasm of students hasbeen mobilized effectively and the learning self-confidence of students has been strengthenedobviously by implementing the hierarchical teaching in the workplace English.The research is an effective attempt to implement the hierarchical teaching in theworkplace English teaching. Because the scope of research subjects is not widespread thereare certain limitations. In the meantime, I hope that more and more researchers and teacherswill be engaged in researching the hierarchical teaching in the future.
