E-C Translation Of Technical Texts From The Perspective Of Translation Variation Theory

The technical text translation strategy and research have been paid more and more attention by the whole world because of the importance of the petroleum energy. The research of translation strategy is aiming at improving the translation ability of the translator. In the translation circle, most of the researchers and the proposed translation theories mainly focus on complete translation strategy. However, the translation variation theory seldom got good graces from scholars. According to the history of translation variation theory, it is easy to see that translation variation phenomena exist in many translation works. Dr Huang proposed a new translation theory based on practical translation and theoretical research for many years, and illustrated the strategy clearly which contains seven appreciate adaptations and eleven translation varieties in the practical translation. As far as I am concerned, translation variation theory inherits and develops the complete translation, and provides a better service with the readers according to their special needs.As we know, petroleum technical translation is attached to EST category. Different from literary translation, petroleum technical translation has its own lexical and syntactical features, and it seldom reflects cultural differences and affective meaning, so that complete translation plays as a dominant role in technical text translation strategy. However, with the development of translation variation theory and the growing demand of the readers, more and more people pay attention to the necessity and possibility of the connection between translation variation and petroleum technical. In modern times, petroleum technical text translation which is conducted to information transmission needs to be fast and brief so as to follow the step of the development in science and technology. Dr Huang also proposed that EST needs "fast, reduction, adaptation" based on case study. The translation variation theory has different characteristics from complete translation to absorb foreign information quickly and directly. Therefore, this kind of theory is adoptable for petroleum technical translation. The nature of this theory is the translator’s reproducing the conceptual activity and interlingual activity from the contents of the original by using the appreciate adaptations, such as expandable strategy, deletable strategy, editing strategy, narrative strategy, condensed strategy, combined strategy, and reformable strategy to meet the special needs of the special readers under special circumstances. Based on translation variation theory, this thesis combines the practical characteristics of petroleum technical translation and the special needs of certain readers to demonstrate the significance meaning of translation varieties in E-C translation of technical text, supplying more and more practical translation experiences for other translators.
