Strategies And Techniques In Chinese-English Geology And Petroleum Translation

In this age of globalization and energy crisis, global cooperation andcommunication in the field of geology, mining, and petroleum industry is playing anincreasingly important role. Translation of relevant texts like mineral explorationreport and technical services contract is therefore greatly needed to acceleratecommunication and exchanges.Translators in the fields of geology and petroleum can be divided into two groups:one group people have learning background but their language proficiency andtranslation skills are not that desirable; the other group people are language learnersbut they know little about mining and petroleum industry. So, on the basis of authentictexts, this thesis analyzes the theory, principles and techniques of the translation in thefield of geology and petroleum under the guidance of Nida’s functional equivalencetheory and Peter Newmark’s translation theory. It is aimed to probe thecontent-focused text and its translation from a new perspective and to improve thetranslation practice in the fields of geology and petroleum.This thesis is divided into five chapters: Introduction, Literature Review,Characteristics of Geology and Petroleum Translation, Translation Strategies andTechniques in Chinese-English Geology and Petroleum Translation, and conclusion.Nida’s dynamic equivalence underlines reproducing message and receptor’s reaction.Peter Newmark’s translation theory shows different translation methods depending ontext type. These theories can guide translation of content-focused texts on geologyand petroleum. In this thesis, the summary of characteristics of geology and petroleumtranslation can help readers a gain a better understanding. The techniques, which aredrawn on the basis of a large number of authentic examples and studies on relevanttranslation principles, can be helpful in translating texts on geology and petroleum.
