Research On O-day Subtitle Translation From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

With the popularization of Internet in China, an increasing number of foreignmovies or television programs are introduced into China. These audiovisualproductions are welcomed by many Chinese audience, highlighting the importance ofsubtitle translation. Under this kind of situation, some self-organized fansub groups inChina have developed rapidly. In order to meet the needs of the audience, theyconstantly improve the speed and efficiency of translating subtitles while ensuring thequality of the translation. Usually in the24hours after some popular TV plays arereleased abroad, the Chinese audience are be able to seek out the video sources thathave been already translated on the Internet. This kind of TV plays are has beentranslated download resources, such repertoire subtitles group aptly called "O-dayshows ".Although there have been many research results of subtitle translation, most ofthem regard subtitle translation as a whole. Translation of O-day shows is notdistinguished from common subtitle translation, with its’ particularities ignored. Theauthor thinks, to a certain extent, translation of O-day shows is different from commonsubtitle translation. Therefore, the author combines the concept of O-day and subtitletranslation, terming this special form of translation as O-day Subtitle Translation.This paper adopts skopos theory as the theoretical framework to analyze thepurpose of O-day subtitle translation, namely to release translated subtitles in theshortest time under the condition that the translation quality is ensured, which simplymeans the efficiency of O-day subtitle translation is the higher, the better. Through thecase study and the interview with fansub group, this thesis summarizes how is theefficiency of subtitle translation is improved in terms of translation strategies and themanagement of translation team.
