This thesis, based on the employment of a great number of first-hand examples as asupportive ground for the main arguments of the thesis, makes a scientific andsystematic study on the translation of Chinese network neologisms into English fromthe perspective of cross-cultural communication and pragmatics, aiming at revealingsome factors which influence the translation of Chinese network neologisms,to solveproblems that may arise in the translation of Chinese neologisms. While this paperalso discusses the translation methods of Chinese network neologisms into English.China’s comprehensive national power is increasing remarkably and China isintegrated into international society in politics, economy and culture. China hasentered into WTO and held Beijing2008Olympic Games as well as Shanghai2010Expo successfully. The communications with foreign countries make theinternational status of China elevated. With the rise of the status, it is very necessaryfor us Chinese to reveal China’s time-honored history and preeminent culture toforeign countries and China needs to strengthen the communication and exchangeswith other countries to achieve all-around understanding between each other.Translation work undoubtedly plays a quite crucial role in this process. We all know that language and culture influence mutually. Language is the carrier ofculture and reflects the changes of it. Network language has the same character asany other language. Simultaneously, culture determines the formation and features oflanguage. Words are the most important part of language and the most active culturalinformation reflector. The matters which are related to a nation such as the materialenvironment, social structure and spiritual belief are manifested through words of anation. In order to introduce the unique culture of China, translators should layemphasis on the translation of vocabulary with Chinese characteristics. Chinesenetwork neologisms are a special kind of the words with Chinese characteristicswhich is used to express newest things and phenomena of China. The introduction ofChinese network neologisms to foreigners is very necessary. In order to makeforeigners understand Chinese network neologisms clearly, we should firstly analyzethe cultural and pragmatic factors which influence the translation of Chinese networkneologism.This thesis will discuss the cultural and pragmatic factors which influence thetranslation of Chinese network neologisms. The author tries to adopt the qualitativeway of analysis to conduct the research. The data collection is mainly through theapproaches of statistics, case study, introspection and interview. The author hopesthat this thesis can provide certain help for translators, thereby improving the qualityof translation works.
