| The accelerating process of economic globalization and expansion of China’sforeign trade make China’s foreign trade policy attract global attention. The quality oftranslation of the policy directly influences the exchange results between foreigncountries and China, state interest and national image.This report is based on the Chinese-English translation of the latest trade policyissued by Ministry of Commerce, that is, The twelfth five-year plan for foreign tradedevelopment (hereinafter referred to as†the Planâ€). The plan consists of five parts andthe full text is about10,000Chinese characters, which is translated by the author aloneunder the guidance of her supervisor. By analyzing the representative cases, this reportexplores how to ensure quality and efficiency through pre-translational analysis andpreparations, and summarizes several commonly used translation skills in the translationpractice of this kind of text with the hope of providing some reference.In this report, the author firstly reviews the overall grasp of the plan, includingtranslation theory and the analysis of text type as well as the translationstandard--accuracy; then the author introduces the pre-translational preparations work.In the translation process, the author flexibly uses translation techniques likeamplification, ellipsis, reorganization and conversion to overcome understandingobstacles caused by language and culture factors for the targeted readers.Through this translation practice, the author draws the following conclusions.Firstly, preparation work before translation should be attached to high importance byevery translator, because it decides the efficiency and quality of translation. Secondly,accuracy should be given the top priority when translator translates the text like the Planand the translator should use various techniques to ensure the faithfulness of translationand improve communication effects. Thirdly, good translation work is absolutely not finished in one day and it requires a lot of practice and summary. There is no besttranslation but only better translation, therefore a qualified translator should keep thespirit of contest. The four translation techniques mentioned in the analysis cases aretypical skills used in this type of Chinese-English translation and the author hopes thatthis report can provide some references for later translation work. |
