| This thesis uses the functionalist approach to analysis the brief, types and function ofthe international maritime conventions, and summarizes the translation requirements,which give instructions for resolving translation problems：(1) Pragmatic translationproblems could be solved by the translation requirements yielded from comparisonof the extra textual factors between the source text and the target text;(2)Convention-related translation problems could be solved by making someadaptations or adjustments in accordance with specific conventions in differentculture;(3) Linguistic translation problems could be identified in vocabulary，syntaxor other linguistic features. Equivalent translation could only be achieved in line withthe transfer requirements and intended functions. Base on this theoretical framework,the thesis try to propose the translation strategies for the international maritimeconventions translation by a case study of the Manila Amendment to the STCW. Atlast, the author also tries to improve some translation in the Chinese translatingversion of the Manila Amendment.The international maritime conventions translation is a specific field of the legaltranslation. In this regard, a satisfactory translating text of the maritime conventionscould only be drafted when the translators have a good command of bilingual andmaritime knowledge, makes reasonable use of professional resources and know wellthe standards of legal drafting. This thesis insists that a combination of the theory andpractice in this field will make the international maritime conventions translation inour country more and more accurate, standardized and authoritative. The authorhopes to provide more help for the effective implementation of compliance by thestudy of the international maritime conventions translation. |
