An Implementation-aimed Study On Translation Principles Of The Manila Amendments To STCW Convention And Code

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted the Manila Amendments to International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers,1978 in 2010. The Manila Amendments to STCW Convention and Code reflect the newest developments in shipping industry and navigation techniques and highlight the training of the overall quality of seafarers as well. The Amendments will promote the marine safety and security and protect the ocean environment. Therefore, it is of great significance to translate the Manila Amendments for the purpose of helping Chinese seafarers comply with them.Hence, by using the top-down translation approach advocated by the functionalists, this thesis carries on a tentative research on the implementation-aimed translation principles of the Manila Amendments to STCW Convention and Code with functionalist translation theories as a theoretical basis. After a brief introduction to the background, major revisions and the linguistic characteristics of the Manila Amendments and under the framework of functionalist translation theories, the author of the thesis proposes three tentative translation principles of the Manila Amendments on the macro level, which are:(1) Principle of IMC Translation Consistency; (2) Principle of Respect for Maritime Culture; (3) Principle of Respect for Practice on Board Ships. The thesis is intended to be helpful in the translation of other International Maritime Conventions and related researches in the future.
