As a sort of intelligence resources combined with decision ability andimplementation power, design can help transfer the abstract science andtechnology research results into specific products, and thus to be theindispensable product element and brain force for the currentknowledge-economy time. The design value is a comprehensive reflect ofthe social productive power, the innovation driving forces, the cultural soft–influence and the national competitive strength.From the past decade, the Finnish DESIGNIUM center released a seriesGlobal Design Competiveness Ranking based on the yearly World EconomicForum Global Competitiveness Ranking with7index of the Companyspending on R&D, Nature of competitive advantage, Value chain presence,Capacity for innovation, Production process sophistication, Extent ofmarketing and Degree of customer orientation that extracted from the twelveGCR competiveness pillars. As both these two ranking coincide with eachother very much that we can draw a direct proportion between the nationalstrength, design competitiveness and innovation. Design lies in the core ofnational innovation, the stronger design infiltration, the higher innovation leveland business sophistication and the more competitive national comprehensivestrength. The current international development tendency is to concern thetruly need of our human beings, respect the nature and promote healthierlife-style through innovation solution, therefore the future national competitivepower will certainly weight the design force and the sustainability consideration,and this proportion will be perhaps bigger along with increasingly serious problems of environmental degradation and resources shortage.The design competitiveness ranking demonstrates the global designindustry distribution and the diverse advantage of different regions, andconsequently raises the international attention to follow the initiative ofintegrating the design forces in the innovation-driven economy and thenational development strategy. This is particular for those regions of Finland,Denmark, England and South Korea that with sophisticate national designsystem, strategic-high objective and sound implementation mechanism, theyhave been far on the road of exploring the design potential either in thescience and technology innovation or the cultural creative industry. So theirexperience should certainly be valuable references for China’s designdevelopment.China is now lag quite behind in design industrialization and designeconomic efficiency, to develop an innovation-driven society, enhance thecultural soft strength and lift the national competitiveness, we need tostrengthen our ability by activating the traditional and natural design resources,cultivate the designs industry and innovation, and enlarge the design thinkingengagement in business sector and public service. Above all, we need toimplement a series of national design policy correspondence to the overalldevelopment strategy of optimization the industrial structure, science andtechnology innovation and global branding strategy, increasing the socialpublic product and service and the construction of Beautiful China and eventually release the potential economic efficiency of design and sustainabledesign thinking strategy.
