With the rapid development of globalization, people from differentcountries communicate with each other more frequently than before. The importanceof English, the language of the world, is getting more and more prominent. Theresearches on English language teaching (ELT) are increasing. Textbook is one of theimportant factors that influence the teaching effects. More and more people begin torealize the importance of textbooks. There are various criteria for the compilation oftextbooks and their evaluations. Nowadays, most of the researches on textbookcompilation and evaluation are based on learning theory and needs analysis. However, memory and forgetting rules, repetition theory, spiral and liner structures are alsoamong the important theories, which also should be taken into consideration.Based on these theories, the thesis studies NCE-II, one of the mostpopular English textbooks in China. The main innovation lies in the orientation thatits main research contents are the compilations of the verb tenses in NCE-II from theperspective of recurrence. The writer collected all the data of the times of occurrencesof all verb tenses in NCE-II, and made a statistical analysis and discussion of thearrangement of the verb tenses in NCE-II according to related theories. It expoundedand proved the advantages and disadvantages in the compilation of NCE-II. That is inNCE-II, the compilations of most verb tenses were developed based on the abovetheories, which made the book scientific and systemic to some extent. Nevertheless, the compilations of a few verb tenses have not been developed in accordance withthese theories. As a whole, NCE-II is an English textbook which was compiled by thewriter, Alexander, deliberately following the memory and forgetting theory, repetitiontheory, liner and spiral structures.
