The translation of the company profiles of the Chinese building material companiesbelongs to the translation of informative text. A translation-oriented text analysis ofsource texts can help the translators to know about the aspects that should be consideredin the translation process of company profiles. On the basis of the text analysis,translators may produce target texts not only meeting the intended purpose of thesenders, but also catering to the audiences’ expectations towards the target texts.Before translating, translators need to analysis the source text’s extratextual factors,including sender and sender’s intention, audience, medium, place of communication,time of communication, motive for communication, text function; as well as theintratextual factors, including subject matter, content, presuppositions, lexis, sentencestructure, etc.. Besides, translators need to refer to the features of the relevant companyprofiles in the target culture. Nevertheless, it doesn’t mean that translators shouldtranslate the company profiles fully in accordance with the company profiles in thetarget culture. Since translation is a kind of intercultural communication, some positiveaspects of the Chinese culture should be retained in the target text, which will make thetarget text audience know more about the Chinese culture.A comparison of the source texts and the target texts of the company profiles of theChinese building material companies and the American company profiles reveals that tosome extent, the target text audiences are taken into consideration by the translators; thetranslation retains some positive aspects of Chinese culture; the translation is on thebasis of loyalty. Meanwhile some problems exist in the translation: firstly, thetranslation is impacted by Chinese culture largely; secondly, the translators fail to takethe target text audiences into a full consideration; thirdly, there are omissions andmistranslation of the technical terms in the translation. In view of the problems, firstly, translators should communicate with the senders well about the translation; secondly,translators should refer to some relevant company profiles in the target culture; thirdly,translators should make a comprehensive text analysis before translating; fourthly,translators should pay more attention to the differences between Chinese and Westerncultures; fifthly, translators must be responsible for the translationAs a kind of intercultural communication, translation can fulfill the intendedpurpose of the target texts only when it meets its communicative function successfully.Then more foreign customers will know about Chinese companies, and Chinesecompanies can gain more profit from overseas markets.
