With the extensive exchanges of advanced technologies at home and abroad, thetranslation of scientific and technical data has become the common objects of translationtasks.In viewing of the characteristics of scientific and technical data, the faithfulness to theoriginal text and the standardizations of the technical terms are two main goals of ESTtranslation. What’s more, the translation quality of technical data has vital importance to theimplementation of the constructive and technical project. A good translation of technical datamay not bring any brilliance to the technique or the engineer, but a poor translation may bringdevastation to the implementation of the construction project. Therefore, when dealing withEST translation, the translators should not only adopt the appropriate translation strategies butalso maintain a high sense of responsibility to finish the translation task.The report is based on the English-Chinese translation of Section4and Section5ofDesignBuilder1.2User Manual, about11,000words, exclusive of words in diagrams.The report includes6parts. They are: Introduction; Chapter1, the task description;Chapter2, the translation process including analyzing the original text, establishing thetechnical-terms corpus, proofreading and finalizing the translated text; Chapter3, the caseanalysis, including the translation of technical terms, prepositional phrases and pairs ofantonyms; Chapter4, a retrospection of problems and deficiencies of this translation task; andConclusion sums up what the author has done and what the author has learned or somethinglike that in the process of the translation.As the report reveals, in EST translation, a translator should pay great attention toreproduction of the functions and targets of the original text, to the correctness of technicalterms, to the comprehensiveness of the text and to the acquaintance of professionalbackground so as to achieve a good performance in EST translation.It is hoped that this report will offer some referential value for the translation of similarsmall-scale EST translation projects.
