Objection To assess the diagnostic value of ultrasonography and mammography for mucinous carcinoma of the breast.Materials and Methods Retrospect on forty-four mucinous carcinoma of the breast cases diagnosed by tissue biopsy, analyze the imaging characteristics of ultrasonography and mammography. To diagnosis and differential diagnosis mucinous carcinoma of the breast by ultrasonography and mammography before operation,. Combined two methods to diagnosis mucinous carcinoma of the breast,and analyse the results with Statistical analysis.Results:1. Ultrasound findings:The pure type expression as mass with sharp border (92.3%)、homogeneous low level internal echo(84.6%), behind echo enhance(76.9%); The mixed type expression as mass with sign of lobulation/spicule (74.2%) heterogeneous equal internal echo (58.1%), behind echo enhance (32.3%); The behind echo enhance was found more in the pure type than in mixed type; The mass L/T>1was found more in the mixed type than in pure type; The inside echo was found higher in the mixed type than in pure type; The blood signal was found more in the mixed type than in pure type (P<0.05)2. mammography findings:The pure type expression as high density mass with sharp border (90.9%)、regular border (81.8%),even no mass showed. The mixed type expression as high density mass with obscure boundary (46.2%)、sign of lobulation/spicule (53.8%), some with malignant calcification (13.6%) Differences of sign of lobulation/spicule were found between pure mucinous carcinoma and mixed type (P<0.05)3.The ultrasonographic detection rate of mass (100%) is higher than mammography (84.1%). The mammographic detection rate of calcification (40.9%) is higher than ultrasonography (27.3%).(p<0.05)4. The correct diagnostic rate of the ultrasonography86.4%is higher than mammography (52.3%)(p<0.05);, The correct diagnostic rate of the combination of ultrasonography and mammography (88.6%) is higher than mammography (52.3%)(p<0.05)Conclusion:1. The ultrasonography can diagnosis. The pure type and mixed type of mucinous carcinoma of the breast,have different characteristics.2.There are limitations of diagnosis of mucinous carcinoma of the breast by mammography.but the superiority was found when diagnosis with mixed type with calcification.3. The correct diagnostic rate of the ultrasonography is higher than mammography.The correct diagnostic rate of the combination of ultrasonography and mammography is higher than there separate application.
