Objective To assess the current knowledge levels regarding melanoma of clinicians in Grade III-A general hospitals for improving the diagnosis and treatment of melanoma at the early stage. Methods Clinicians in Grade III-A general hospitals of Gansu Province were chosen by the combination of randomized sampling and cluster sampling. An anonymous and self-designed structured questionnaire was answered by participants on spot. The data collected by two person alone with Software EpiData, if different, were subjected to original data. Both Quantile-Quantile Plot(Q-Q plot) and Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test(D Test) were adopted to perform the Normality Test of measurement data with Mean±SD used for the normal and Maximum, Minimum, Median and Interquartile Range(IQR) for the opposite. Enumeration data were summerized using Frequency, rate or Constituent Ratio. Software Excel and SPSS18.0were applied to analyze them. Results There were610responses received with a high effective rate up to98.9%. A total of93.0%knew that ultraviolet could increase the risk of melanoma while only a few of participants accurately quantified the recommended value of Sun Protect Factor(43.4%) and interval time of reapplying sunscreens(30.2%). Wearing a long sleeved clothing was the most popular way for sun protection(33.5%) with an difference between genders (P<0.001). A total of56.7%of participants can correctly identified color change to be one of early clinical manifestations of melanoma. Comparatively low awareness rates were shown on how to remove pigmented nevi properly(31.5%), the minimum diameter of skin pigmentation lesion to be highly suspicious of melanoma(43.1%), the most common primary site of melanoma(43.1%), the most effective therapy for metastatic melanoma(38.0%) and the prognosis of melanoma compared with lung cancer(45.2%). Up to49.9%of participants, moreover, took systemic skin examination for less than three patients per ten patients. With3%of participants indifferent,1.6%of participants thought it not necessary to learn knowledge of melanoma. Participants preferring to read textbooks merely accounted for35.8percent. In addition, the mean accuracy of senior clinicians and physicians were little higher, respectively58.4%and57.3%, while that of clinicians of different grades(P=0.53) and departments(P=0.72) both showed no statistically significant differences. Conclusions The perception of China clinicians on melanoma, especially how to take valid casual precautions and discover early to treat in time, remained to be improved. Professional training should be received for clinicians not only to strengthen their awareness of take essential skin examination in daily work but enable them to treat and educate patients properly.
