Objective:To estimate the horizontal and vertical symmetry in unilateral complete cleft lip and palate (UCLP) patients with non cleft lip and palate (CLP) patients in mixed dentition period by measuring posterior-anterior radiographs and panoramic radiographs. Methods:A total of30patients with UCLP (16males and14females) were selected as the UCLP group, while30non-CLP children (15males and15females) as control group. The posterior-anterior radiographs and panoramic radiographs were taken and measured for the two groups. The data were analyzed by SPSS19.0software package.Results:1. The symmetry of vertical plane:①In vertical plane, maxillofacial asymmetry was found in UCLP patients during mixed dentition period, the asymmetry points including MxH, NcH, NaH, CoH, GoH, AgH, CH, RH,(CH+RH) and d-Ag,and the difference was significant (P<0.05). CoH,GoH,AgH,CH, RH and CH+RH of the non-cleft side were higher than the cleft side.②In vertical plane, the most asymmetry points of UCLP patients in mixed dentition period were on the Na point(8.76%),Nc point(7.8%).③Compared to control group, the vertical asymmetry index of UCLP patients in mixed dentition period had statistically significant, including Mx, Nc, Na, Co, Go, Ag, CH, RH,(CH+RH) and d-Ag (P<0.05)④On the vertical plane, the asymmetry index of Go in UCLP patients had correlation with the asymmetry index of Nc, and the difference was significant (P<0.05)2. The symmetry of horizontal plane:①In horizontal plane, maxillofacial asymmetry was found in UCLP patients during mixed dentition period, including MxV, NcV, NaV, CoV, GoV and AgV, and the difference had statistically significant (P<0.05). In maxilla and mandible, the width of non cleft side were higher than the cleft side.②On the horizontal plane, the most asymmetry points of UCLP patients in mixed dentition period were on the Na point(29.19%),Nc point(21.99%).③On the horizontal plane, the asymmetry index of Ag in UCLP patients had correlation with the asymmetry index of Nc, and the difference was significant (P<0.05)Conclusion:④In horizontal plane and vertical plane, unilateral complete cleft lip and palate patients during mixed dentition period has maxillofacial asymmetric deformity. ②In unilateral complete cleft lip and palate patients during mixed dentition period, the asymmetry deformity of maxilla is more serious than that mandibular asymmetry.③In vertical and horizontal plane, the cleft side of UCLP patients during during mixed dentition period has mandibular deficiency. In horizontal plane, the cleft side of UCLP patients during mixed dentition period has maxillary deficiency.④Comparied with the health side in UCLP patients during mixed dentition period, the cleft side has mandibular deficiency on the vertical plane.
